Mixed MEssages:

Cassie KOllman Quintet

Release Date: 2026

Mixed Messages is a deeply collaborative album from Boston-based jazz singer-songwriter Cassie Kollman, created with longtime bandmates Matt Savage (piano), Sebastian Guerrero (bass), Manuel Puerta (drums), and Matthew Ryu (guitar). Produced by Brian Charles (Moby, Dispatch, John Lockwood), the record is shaped by relationships spanning 4 to 14 years. With members joining the project from Colombia, South Korea, and the U.S.; personal and musical trust powers its responsiveness and cohesion.

Improvisation and ensemble chemistry are the record’s pillars. The band’s shared language is sensitive, responsive, and intimately collaborative, leaving room for each member’s voice inside a well-established groove.

Vocals are the throughline of the record: technically ambitious, harmonically rich, and story-forward. Cassie’s original compositions explore themes of perfectionism, attachment wounds, contraction, and expansion, ultimately reaching toward healing and reinvention, alongside a few reimagined standards that fit the same emotional world. In her arrangements, Cassie transforms American-canon repertoire by weaving text from multiple sources into new, unexpected narratives; for example, her revenge ballad to billionaires titled “Get Yours” blended with text from Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child.”

Across the album, the musicians’ backgrounds and listening histories show up as texture and color, but the center stays unmistakably jazz: ensemble interplay, improvisational clarity, and songcraft. Mixed Messages is an emotionally nuanced collection of music that grooves,  surprises, and tells the artists’ truth.
